Shambi’s real life mother, Shadow, was a Soay sheep, one of the oldest breed of sheep.

Shadow gave birth to her first set of twins in 2023 but decided she hadn’t enough milk for two, so rejected the smaller girl to give her bigger brother, later named Schubert, a better chance of survival.

Fortunately we found the deserted lamb very soon after she was born, and it was quickly apparent Shadow was not going to change her mind and mother her!

We therefore bottle-fed her and brought her up in the house, initially with the two dogs, Dougal and Dulcie. She really did look and move more like a fawn than a Soay lamb so the name of Shambi, derived from the Walt Disney film starring Bambi, a white-tailed deer, seemed fitting.
